The Masonic Muhammad—Modern Franco-Iranian Visual Encounters in Prophetic Iconography

Art Historian Christiane Gruber explores the origins of “Young Muhammad,” a pictorial adaptation embodying the Prophet’s youth and vitality. This heroic imagery was well-suited to French and Iranian revolutionary milieus and representative of a highly dynamic moment in world history. Gruber traces the origins of this image to a 19th-century European print that proliferated in the form of Persian pictorial carpets. A reception will follow the talk.
