For Families

Families – from the youngest members to seniors – are invited to participate in the Museum's entertaining and engaging art-based experiences.

Family Guide

Designed to guide our younger visitors' experience of Intersections, our permanent collections gallery, this brochure for 5-12 year-olds enhances their visit with stories of peoples from around the world, matching games, and sketching activities. Pick up a copy in the Museum lobby or Intersections gallery, or download one now.

ArtVentures: Puzzle and Play

Launch your family on an ArtVenture during your next visit to the Fowler Museum. A tote bag full of puzzles awaits to help families play their way through Intersections! Ask for ArtVentures: Puzzle and Play at the information desk in the Museum's lobby.

World of Art Workshops

Adults and families with children 8 years and older are invited to experience a World of Art. Inspired by imagery in the exhibitions, participants engage in studio art projects led by guest artists. A materials fee applies. Participation is limited to 20 per workshop and reservations are required.

Check our Calendar for upcoming World of Art Workshops.

Kids in the Courtyard

One Sunday per month, kids and kids-at-heart are welcome at a drop-in workshop in the Fowler's courtyard between 1 and 4 pm to take part in hands-on learning. Families can learn about world cultures through games and art-making activities. This program is free and open to the public.

Check our Calendar for upcoming Kids in the Courtyard programs.

KIDSMUSE Summer Camp

KIDSMUSE is developed and led by a team of experienced educators who help children make personal connections and link world arts to their everyday lives. Two sessions, stressing experiential learning for 6–8 and 9–12 year-olds, are offered each summer in July and August. Camp hours are 9 am–12 pm.

Suggestions for your Visit

  • Several short visits to the museum are better than one long visit. Children will let you know when they've had enough.
  • Jumpstart your child's visual literacy by asking open-ended questions about the artworks, like
  • Who made it?
What was it made to do?
What materials were used by the artist?
Encourage your child to think about the peoples and cultures whose works of art are on view. At the same time, what can these works teach us about ourselves?

    • Guide your children to notice certain gallery cues that will enhance their visit.
    • What are the big ideas or themes in the exhibition?
What information about the artworks can be learned from the labels?
Can one learn even more about the works of art by looking at them from different viewpoints?
Why are certain works of art presented on their own and others with a group of objects?
What can photographs and videos teach us?
How is color used in the gallery?

    • Pick up a calendar of events and plan your next visit around an activity designed especially for children.
    • Bring a snack and take a break in the courtyard.
    • Make a day of it! Visit other campus destinations like the UCLA Sculpture Garden and Hammer Museum.
    • Pick up a Family Guide and borrow an ArtVenture: Puzzle and Play in our Intersections: World Arts, Local Lives exhibition.
