For Adults & College Students
The Fowler Museum presents a breadth of programs that aim to educate, enlighten, and engage general adult audiences and the university community including the staff, faculty, and students of UCLA and neighboring institutions.
Public Programs
The Fowler's public programs are designed to reflect and complement its dynamic exhibition program, as well as highlight the Museum's world-renowned collection of art from Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and the Americas.
Programs ranging from symposia and film screenings, to artists' walkthroughs, informal workshops and in-depth study programs offer audiences a number of exciting events to enjoy throughout the year.

Signature series include:
Fowler Outspoken events feature speakers in a lecture, conversation, or panel format, and provide audiences access to emerging and established artists, curators, scholars, performers, and other cultural figures.
| Established in 2002, Fowler Out Loud! is the museum's one-of-a-kind performance series that takes place on Thursday nights throughout the academic school year and features international music, dance, poetry, theater, and performance art by UCLA students. |

| Fowler Festivals are a biennial, thematic celebration that feature activities for all age ranges—including art workshops, stage performances, costume parades, food booths, and more. |

Public programs at the Fowler Museum are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.
Seniors Program
Offered several times a year, Senior Open Houses at the Fowler are special programs for visitors age 65 and older. Groups from senior centers are given private tours of current exhibitions—seniors can then choose to explore the museum at their leisure or join seniors from other centers in the museum's courtyard for refreshments.
Senior Open Houses are free of charge. Transportation assistance is included when possible for senior centers with a demonstrated need. To include your senior center in the Fowler's seniors program, please call 310/825-8655.
Tours for Adult and College Groups
Guided Tours
Groups and college classes are invited to enhance their understanding and appreciation of the Fowler's current exhibitions by scheduling a tour with a trained gallery educator.
Advance reservations are required for all groups; tours are free; a minimum of 15 people is required.
Tours with gallery educators last approximately an hour. Reservations are accepted throughout the year. Groups may be scheduled Wednesday through Friday between noon and 5 pm , and on Thursday evenings until 7 pm . No weekend tours are available.

Self-guided Tours
Groups may also choose to explore exhibitions on their own. If your group size is in excess of 75 people, please call (310) 206-5663 or email the Education Department to ensure that we accommodate your group.
Special Opportunities for UCLA Students
Internships and Student Employment Opportunities
Each fall, the Fowler hires 3-5 UCLA students to assist the Education Department in developing and implementing school, family, and public programs. These Museum Educators lead gallery tours and hands-on experiences, including art-making and performance-based activities, for students and adults. They also support administrative needs of the Education Department, including answering phones, scheduling tours, photocopying, sending confirmation packets, filing, and other tasks as needed.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate or graduate UCLA student with work-study allocations.
- Able to commit to working 10 hours per week in 4 hour shifts (minimum requirement) for all three quarters of the academic year.
- Background in art and/or education helpful, but not required. Students from the Departments of Art, Art History, World Arts and Culture, Ethnomusicology, History, and Anthropology are encouraged to apply.

Scholarships and Awards
The Arnold Rubin Award and the Ralph C. Altman Award are for Ph.D. students planning a career in a field related to non-Western art. Applicants should be a graduate student working in the areas of African, Pacific, Asian, or Native North and South American arts and material culture, or popular culture phenomena emphasiziing the unconventional arts of living peoples, regardless of geographic area. The recipient of each award will receive $3,000. Applicants will be considered automatically for both awards. Any Ph.D. student registered at UCLA (or receiving a Ph.D. degree from UCLA) in the fields described above is eligible; students from a wide range of departments are encouraged to apply. Recipients are expected to present their findings at a roundtable session with the staff of the Fowler Museum and to credit the awards in any resulting publication, a copy of which should be provided to the Museum.
The Sarah Elizabeth Gilfillan Award was established in 2007 by family, friends and colleagues in memory of Sarah Gilfillan. She was associate director of development for the Fowler Museum and did curatorial work on several important Latin American projects. Fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, Ms. Gilfillan had extensive experience researching and working in art museums and galleries in Brazil, Mexico and Spain. Her goal had been to enter a Ph.D. program in Latin American art history. This award provides a travel stipend of $2500 to assist with field research or study abroad. Only Ph.D. students in the field of Latin American arts may apply.
