26th Sammy Yukuan Lee Lecture on Chinese Archaeology and Art: Nancy Steinhardt on Yuan: Chinese Architecture, Mongol Patrons, Asian Archaeology

Nancy Steinhardt, chair, East Asian Languages and Civilizations, University of Pennsylvania, will focus on architecture of the Yuan dynasty (1267–1368), the period of Mongolian rule, to address three subjects: how the Mongols used Chinese buildings to enhance their imperial identity, the little-known private worlds of the Mongols and of Chinese subjects under Mongolian rule, and how our knowledge of the private worlds is dependent not only on archaeology, but on the nationalities of those who convey it.

Reception to follow.

Co-presented with UCLA Center for Chinese Studies.
